Divide And Conquer: Unpacking Stratfor’s Rise To Power By @Steve_Horn1022 #WikiLeaks

The home page of the Stratfor website is seen on a computer monitor in London Wendesday Jan 11, 2012. Security analysis firm Stratfor has relaunched its website after hackers brought down its servers and stole thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to its clients. Stratfor acknowledged Wednesday that the company had not encrypted customer information a major embarrassment for a security company. (AP Photo/Cassandra Vinograd)
(AP/Cassandra Vinograd)
This is Part 1 of an exclusive Mint Press News investigation into the story of Stratfor.
On Christmas Day 2011, the hacktivist collective Anonymous ruined the day for a security firm that, throughout much of its history, enjoyed operating in the shadows.
The firm: Strategic Forecasting, Inc., an Austin, Texas-based intelligence-collecting contracting company better known as Stratfor. Its clients include some of the most profitable multinational corporations on the planet, such as the American Petroleum Institute, Archer Daniels Midland, Dow Chemical, Duke Energy, Northrop Grumman, Intel and Coca-Cola.
Working through an informant named “Sabu,” who posed as a fellow “comrade,” federal officials tracked down the hacktivist responsible for the leak, Chicago’s Jeremy Hammond, just three months later.
In March 2012, the FBI raided Hammond’s apartment and handed him charges. After more than a year of sitting in the Manhattan Correctional Center, Hammond eventually settled out of court in May 2013. He pleaded guilty to violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, and his sentence will be handed down on Sept. 6. He may serve up to 10 years in prison.
Stratfor’s precursor, Pagan International, built the corporate public relations playbook still utilized by the firm today.
The goal of a corporate PR plan “must be to separate the fanatic activist leaders … from the overwhelming majority of their followers: decent, concerned people who are willing to judge us on the basis of our openness and usefulness,” Pagan stated in 1982, fully understanding that the public should never know this was the game plan.
Hammond — perhaps without knowing every detail of the history of the playbook itself — essentially cited it as the rationale behind his Stratfor hack and leak to WikiLeaks.
“I believe in the power of the truth. In keeping with that, I do not want to hide what I did or to shy away from my actions,” he stated in a press release announcing the plea deal. “I believe people have a right to know what governments and corporations are doing behind closed doors.”
In this investigation, Mint Press examines Stratfor’s rise to power and its use of the “divide and conquer” philosophy to take on some of the largest boycott movements against multinational corporations.

Becoming of member of the @Detroitcats Team #Detroit

If you are one of my Twitter followers, you know how passionate I am about Detroit. I've been on a new adventure in life and learning more about our environment, tar sands, pipelines and the list goes on.

On this new journey I have had the pleasure of meeting new people and groups. One group in particular is called DCATS and I've invested a few weeks learning about what they do. Today July 24th, 2013 I have become a member of this great group of people. All opinions expressed will be mine as I will never speak on behalf of this group unless otherwise noted. I can NOT express how honored I feel to be part of such an amazing team of people.

To give you a little history ABOUT THEM

From their site....

Who We Are

DCATS is a Detroit collective of concerned individuals and organizations whom are uniting in efforts toward the elimination and removal of tar sands petroleum refinement. This is the Detroit branch of MiCATS – Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands.

Mission Statement

Build a diverse and inclusive coalition of people in Detroit committed to building local power and spreading awareness about the destructive nature of tar sands while co-creating a vision for clean energy alternatives as part of the larger movement rising to stop the extraction, refinement, and transportation of tar sands across North America.

Vision

  • Education
    • Think Global, Speak & Act Local - We tie in the global narrative with front porch realities that are more visible, encompassing, palatable, and create
    • Spread awareness of the effects of Marathon to a local and national audience opportunities for direct actions to address local issues in order to elevate this issue to a spot of national concern and priority and add more strength to the argument for an overarching need to restrict fossil fuel companies’ ability to pollute freely and damage our environment
  • Partnership Building/Outreach
    • Be intentional about connecting with our brothers and sisters across the globe fighting against ecologically and socially exploitative and destructive practices that put profit and power before people and planet. We aim to amplify our collective voice to expand the movement of movements for a thriving, socially just, and sustainable planet
    • Work more with groups like 350.org and groups that work with frontline communities
    • Find groups working with alternative and “Free energy” and find ways to partner with them and get the word out, possibly have them come to Detroit(longer term)
    • Share consistent messages at actions and events

@Games4Language Review

For those that don't know, my Grandma came to the US during WWII so I was EXCITED to be given the opportunity for this review. Grandma was from France and still had the accent an all, when she passed a few years ago. Grandma came here in 1942.

    The DL on @Instagram

I'm often asked how I get so many followers or what photo edit app I use. The list of questions go on.. so I thought I'd explain what I have learned in the last 58 weeks of being on Instagram.

This is the screenshot of my IG Page at the moment. Yes I have a lot of followers but , most are ghost. We will cover that soon. Now I'm going to breakdown how to get on Instagram , get it going and make it GREAT!

    DO

    • Follow back when someone follows you (often called #followback with hash tags)
    • LIKE LIKE LIKE people's pictures. The more pics you like , the more known you become. Doing so also makes you a great follower and people will start giving you UNEXPECTED shoutouts --> (increases followers)
    • Remember followers faces or names and INTERACT with them.
    • Comments will get you far BUT only GOOD ones.
    • Use another photo app or double edit on Instagram. Kik me-crisc233 for further instructions on double editing.
    • Picture Quality is EVERYTHING.  Take lots of pictures and EDIT them. People LOVE beautiful pictures and don't really care about a cheap quality picture.
    • HASHTAG HASHTAG . Hash tagging  (# sign) will get you more views on your pics.

    DONT

    • Don't follow to Unfollow so it makes you try and look cool. It doesn't and there are apps now that let people know your game.
    • Never EVER ask for a shoutout. 97% of the time you wont get one and people will be rude to you.
    • Don't WHINE about your life, people will unfollow you.
    • Don't be a jerk. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
    • Never overload your followers timeline with your daily schedule. Sad but true most people don't care and will unfollow, less you have AMAZING photos.
    • Don't be a GHOST FOLLOWER. A GF is someone who follows you so you follow back..but then never likes ANYTHING.

    Science4us.com Review

It's no secret we are huge fans of science in this house. Well recently I was contacted to review Science4us.com. When I told my 5 year old she was super excited, she really understands computers/games.

I don't want to ruin all of the fun but I will tell you about a great lesson we did involving Matter. I set Heaven up on the computer after I set her lesson up the day before. After her lesson, we did an activity that both kids loved! Super easy-super fun!

    • Made Pink Lemonade
    • Poured it in an ice cube tray
    • Waited overnight for it to change
    • Placed each cube in a glass of water to watch it change AGAIN

    About The Company

Science4Us is a comprehensive web-based digital science curriculum for elementary students that includes all of the components necessary for teachers and parents to provide an exemplary science experience for all learners. It is standards based using the inquiry-based 5E Instructional Model.

    How does it work?

Science4Us recognizes that not all classrooms are created equally. As such, the curriculum is designed to be flexible in nature and able to meet the needs of individual classrooms without adding additional software. Teachers can implement the curriculum using one computer for a whole group lesson or several computers for small group instruction. Also, because Science4us is web-based, students can access Science4Us individually in a media center or even at home on the family computer.

    5E Instructional Model

Each module follows the same 5E structure. The first three E’s; Engage, Explore and Explain, are each represented by an online activity as well as an offline activity, followed by multiple Elaborate activities designed to provide cross-curricular opportunities for students to extend and broaden their knowledge and understanding through new experiences. Finally each module includes an interactive Evaluate to assess student learning gains

    @MyColdCast -Mom Tested

Kids get bumps and bruises faster than you can keep up with. Before you know it, one of your kid’s has slammed their finger in a door, jammed it on a basketball or gotten a nasty rope burn from tug-a-war. That’s why everyone should have at least one Cold Cast available in their freezer at all times.

Cold Cast is an ice pack that fits snugly on the injured finger. Children don’t like to sit still long enough to hold an ice pack in place, but the Cold Cast has its own sling so your kids can go on playing while they’re icing. The cast helps treat finger injuries immediately, speeding up the healing process and helping eliminate any complications down the road.

The Cold Cast is safe for kids of all ages. It’s soft and easy to strap into place. Plus, it’s latex-free so as to avoid any allergic reactions.
Injury care is essential to ensuring the fastest healing and avoiding any future problems. Cold Cast provides all five features of P.R.I.C.E., the five main principles of injury care. They include:
    • Protection: Cold Cast cradles tender fingers in a padded cushion.
    • Rest: Wearing the handy product works as a constant reminder to the injured child to let the finger heal.
    • Ice: Cold Cast’s design will allow it to stay cold for 20 minutes, which is the maximum time recommended to ice injuries. Even when frozen, it remains soft and pliable, making it easy for little ones to keep on playing.
    • Compression: The cast can be wrapped around a finger as tightly or as loosely as possible. Wrap it snugly to provide support and compression.
    • Elevation: Cold Cast’s wrist strap will ensure it stays in place even on the busiest kid, letting them carry on with their playtime while they heal!

Prepping For The Upcoming 13/14 School Year Already!?! #Homeschool

I know some of you might have just cringed at the thought but we travel a lot in the summer ( see previous post) so this is my only time to plan. I was going to go with an online type of schooling but things have taking a different road. With that said I will be doing what I have been and this yr's curriculum is a bit different than the past. (If it's not broke why fix it? ;))

Last year I went Saxon Kinder all the way around but this year...I went random and made my own lessons. I have everything in order just need to get individual lesson plans going and I'm set and ready!! That's what I love about homeschooling , each yr becomes somewhat easier. *Different challenges but you feel prepared ;)
